Yuvraj Singh played 40 Tests, 304 ODIs and 58 T20ls but never got a chance to lead Team India. He was one of the most- deserving candidates for the top job but surprisingly missed out. He was Team India's white-ball vice-captain for a few years.
As per Yuvraj Singh, he was expecting to be named the captain of the 2007 T20 World Cup team. The selectors decided to hand the job to MS Dhoni, which surprised Yuvraj as well. The all-rounder was Dhoni's deputy in the ICC event, which India won.
R Ashwin is still an active player but it's now clear that he won't be named the captain of Team India. Forget being considered for captaincy, he hasn't been considered for vice- captaincy despite being India's best spinner since his Test debut.
R Ashwin has been India's top spinner in the home conditions since 2011 and at one stage, he was the leader of India's spin attack across all three formats. He wasn't considered even for vice-captaincy during the peak of his career. Ashwin is now a Test specialist and will retire without captaining Team India.
Before R Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh was the leader of India's spin attack in all three formats. A two-time World Cup winner, Harbhajan always delivered on big stages and was a legend even before he ended his career. But he never captained the national team
In 2011, Harbhajan Singh was appointed as the vice-captain of the ODI team for the away series against West Indies. Following the series, Harbhajan became an irregular member of Team India. He featured in 103 Tests, 236 ODIs and 28 T20Is.
VVS Laxman was the only member of Team India's Fab Four who never captained the Test team. Laxman was a regular in the Test squad and played a key role in the team's success. But he wasn't considered for the top job.

Zaheer Khan was India's best pacer of his time and played a key role in the team's success. He played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is, but all as a player. Zaheer was never considered for the top job and he played under different captains during his career.
Zaheer Khan did get to lead a senior team at the elite level when he was appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals for IPL 2016 and 2017. The left-arm pacer quit the game before IPL 2018 and took up coaching and commentary.
